The Sidney Prize and Other Awards

The Sidney Prize is an annual award presented for outstanding journalism work. Reporters that cover stories that illuminate our time’s most pressing challenges–searching for peace, ensuring better housing, healthcare and employment security for all, as well as upholding civil liberties and democracy while fighting discrimination of any type–whether race, class or religion related–are given special recognition. Established in 1946 to honor the late president of Amalgamated Clothing Workers of America union (which provides parent company to Unite Here and Workers United SEIU), the Hillman Foundation has awarded more than $65 million in prizes since 1946. Boasting a progressive political agenda led by former Amalgamated Clothing Workers President Emeritus Bruce Raynor as well as being overseen by Workers United’s board, its leadership includes former Amalgamated Clothing Workers President Emeritus Bruce Raynor with an active board dominated by workers United organization.

The Sidney Prize winner is announced each second Wednesday of every month and published within that prior month’s publication date. Nominations can be submitted using our online nomination form with deadline for submission being the last day of every month.

David Brooks of The New York Times selects each year the best long-form essays written during that year for his annual Sidney Awards. Recent winners have included Hilton Als of The New York Times and Ed Yong of The Atlantic as well as multiple writers at top national publications.

University of Sydney researchers have earned recognition at Australia’s Eureka Awards – often known as ‘Australia’s Science Oscars’ – including Horizon Fellow Dr Mengyu Li from the School of Physics; Professor Kate Jolliffe from Chemistry; and Peter Banks’ Sensory Conservation Team led by Prof Peter Banks from Life and Environmental Sciences.

Event Cinemas Rising Talent Award was established to honour an innovative NSW-based short filmmaker working in short film with a cash prize of $7,000. Selected by Screen NSW Industry Advisors and presented at the 2023 Sydney Film Festival awards ceremony, this prestigious prize can help showcase these emerging filmmakers and is presented at its awards ceremony each year.
