Sydney Prize awards recognize those making an impactful difference in society. These prestigious accolades can come in several forms and celebrate excellence – these awards may take the form of grants or trophies; sometimes given for academic achievements or volunteer efforts as well. Award categories may differ; generally applicants must submit written work about an assigned topic before being eligible.
Some sidney prizes are literary in nature while others involve social activism. One such prize, the Overland Prize for Short Fiction, is open to writers worldwide regardless of experience and stage in their careers. The winner receives a first prize of $5000 as well as publication in Overland magazine; two runners-up will also be published. Other sidney prizes recognize individuals and groups who promote peace, diversity inclusion and human rights. The Society offers another prestigious literary prize called the Venour V. Nathan Essay Prize to an advanced graduate student or recent PhD who writes an unpublished article related to Christianity history. This award is awarded annually. Last year’s prize went to Emily Michelson’s book Catholic Spectacle and Rome’s Jews: Early Modern Conversion and Resistance funded by Venour V. Nathan as part of her donation. At each Triennial Council Meeting, a prize recipient is honored. Nominations for these honorees are called for one and a half years prior in Key Reporter and General Newsletter; should multiple essays have equal merit then the prize committee reserves the right to split the award among them.
