The 2022 Hong Kong Prize theme “Our Changing World” invites artists from various media to explore how our planet is shifting socially, culturally and economically through their works. Now in its fifth year of presentation, this prize’s first winner – Chinese painter Liu Wenzhi — took first prize for Painting category with The End of the Road; depicting a lonely figure walking alone along a deserted beach this work shows loneliness and isolation felt by individuals living in increasingly fragmented societies.

Noormah Jamal from Hong Kong also won second prize with her acrylic-on-canvas painting “Did the Seed Grow?” It depicts two figures holding potted plants with blank expressions; reflecting our uncertain world and our desire for connection with others. She received an award of HK$10,000 which will go towards SAF’s Make It Better program which offers expressive arts workshops to children in need.

At the 2023 Hong Kong News Awards organized by Newspaper Society Hong Kong, The South China Morning Post won six prizes including Best News Writing (English) and Best Headline awards. City desk reporter Fiona Sun won these accolades with her March 2023 article on carer stresses for elderly or ill family members while subeditor Sariwati Latif won with her story on pro-democracy authors being removed from stores and libraries due to national security considerations.

If no winners are found for either of the top prizes, their funds will be added back into the jackpot for another draw until there is one lucky individual who takes home all of it as their reward.
