The Hongkong Prize

The Hongkong Prize recognizes breakthrough discoveries, pioneering research, and innovative artistic expressions with significant impacts on society. It recognizes individuals who make significant contributions regardless of race, nationality, gender or religious belief. At initial screening stage candidates are evaluated based on significance, originality, long-term sustainability of contributions as well as whether these benefits Hong Kong. Those whose contributions provide global impacts receive higher scores than others.

Winners will be honored with cash prizes and public recognition, in order to encourage young scientists and recognize excellence in scientific research. The award will be bestowed biennially with an estimated total prize fund of up to HK$20 million and chosen via an objective selection process that involves an esteemed panel of distinguished judges scoring each nomination according to specific evaluation criteria; those with the best score in each category will then be selected as winners; they will ensure fair and transparent evaluation processes during this selection process.

Nominations for the Hongkong Prize can be submitted either through self-nominations or third party nomination. Candidates must fulfill certain eligibility requirements, such as being principal author of a published article and conferred Academy Fellowship within 10 years; only studies published in peer-reviewed journals qualify; case reports, reviews or letters to editors do not count towards eligibility for this prize.

The eighth inter-school competition for study projects related to Hong Kong history has come to a successful conclusion and winners will be notified shortly.

The Hongkong Prize was created in 2022 to honour outstanding scientific achievements and contributions made by Hong Kong scientists. It seeks to stimulate innovation, technology transfer and encourage scientific researchers in both Hong Kong SAR and Mainland China.

Each shortlisted team will receive a trophy, medals and certificates as well as sharing equal Merit prizes among its members – each participating school also receiving a school development grant of HK$5,000 – with one team going on to become Hongkong Prize champions and compete at an international final in June 2019 in Russia.

The Hongkong Prize has become an indispensable means of encouraging scientific research in Hong Kong and fostering students’ interest. Furthermore, it has played an essential role in improving science communication in Hong Kong by helping young people understand the significance of scientific research on our daily lives.
