What Is a Casino?

Casinos are establishments dedicated to various forms of gambling. Also referred to as gaming houses, gambling dens, or kasinos, casinos are often combined with hotels, resorts, restaurants, retail shops, or tourist attractions; many feature live entertainment from notable performers. Some casinos such as Monte Carlo Casino in Monaco have become so renowned that they are considered destinations within themselves.

Advertising is essential to the success of casinos; visitors come through advertising alone. Casinos use security measures such as surveillance cameras on and around their casino floors as well as physical security forces in order to prevent cheating and theft by patrons, in collusion with staff. A specialized department often oversees their closed circuit television system (known as an “eye in the sky” in industry terms).

Even with their negative connotations, many still visit casinos for entertainment and luxury. Many casinos market themselves as “destinations” in themselves and promise glamorous experiences to visitors who visit. To retain customers, many casinos provide complimentary drinks or luxury suites; have multiple clubs or pools; as well as specializing in particular games or providing events such as concerts in order to bring them in new customers.

Since casino’s have existed for centuries, only recently have they become more commonplace in society. Now there are over 1,000 casinos across the US alone, many with multiple floors of slot machines, table games, and other forms of entertainment; others provide more personalized experiences and offer intimate settings with dedicated personnel to provide customized service to guests.

Casinos located in exotic locales such as Venice, Monaco and Singapore have become world-renowned destinations, drawing in both high rollers and tourists looking for luxurious experiences. Some casinos have even become so well-known that they’ve inspired movies or novels such as Ben Mezrich’s Busting Vegas which recounts the story of four MIT students who overthrew Las Vegas casino system.

Casino may sound intimidating, but in Spanish and German it merely means “gambling house.” There are countless casinos worldwide that provide an enjoyable day trip or night of gambling fun; some have even been featured in popular movies or TV shows – like Ocean’s Twelve or James Bond: The Spy Who Loved Me.
